Great spelling program for older kids
My son is 14 and finds spelling very difficult … We tried a bunch of the highly rated (and highly expensive) spelling programs through the last few years that were recommended through homeschooling groups. Not one program even came close to this! It started out with small words but because it was considered a "typing program" he didn't feel discouraged … I'm so glad I tried this for him because his spelling improved immensely!
What are the advantages of typing for children who struggle with spelling?
They can...
- Engage multiple senses at the same timeSeeing and hearing combines with the tactile sensory feedback of typing to help words stick.
- Build muscle memory for correct spellingRepeatedly typing words helps “lock in” correct letter sequences. Over time, spelling becomes more automatic because the fingers remember the patterns, not just the brain.
- Strengthen literacy with phonics-based learningA phonics-based curriculum enhances decoding and spelling skills, offering a structured approach to literacy development.
- Access spell check and revise written workWriting on the computer opens up access to spelling feedback and makes it easier to revise written work - no crossed out text or messy erasure marks.
- Boost self-esteem and confidencePositive feedback from typing activities can significantly improve self-esteem and motivation, especially for those with a history of educational challenges.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on the learner, but after a few modules most parents find their child is able to complete work independently. In fact, that’s one of the things parents like most about TTRS! The program opens directly to the last completed module, which minimizes the chances that time is lost looking through menus and encourages a quick start to every session.

With TTRS, spelling help is built into the course. Modules follow a carefully structured program of English phonics and learners improve by repeatedly seeing, hearing and typing groups of words with common spelling patterns. Every fifth module is a dictation exercise where learners hear the word and then spell it with no visual guide.
A child or young-adult who struggles with spelling can simply focus on learning how to type, instead of being embarrassed about using a program that provides literacy instruction.
Yes! TTRS users can create their own typing exercises using spelling words they are learning at school or other words they find hard to spell.
